A Catalan Experience

  • For a touring holiday with a difference, discover the contrasting charms of the rugged Catalan coast and the majestic mountain scenery of the Cerdagne National Park. Travel by Eurostar and TGV, then based respectively in the picture-postcard artists' colony and chic, bustling seaside resort that is Collioure, and the more tranquil Saillagouse, amid mountain streams and pastures, where life unfolds at a more leisurely pace. And connecting the two, an unforgettable return journey through the spectacular landscapes of the eastern Pyrenees in the aptly named "petit train jaune" (little yellow train)

Symbol of Catalonia in its distinctive yellow and blood-red livery, the train climbs its winding way along a track which represents a remarkable feat of engineering. Conceived in 1903 as a means of connecting the the remote mountain-encircled Cerdagne plateau with the rest of the region, and over 20 years in construction, it climbs to 1600 metres in passing the highest station on the mainland SNCF network, on its sedate, snaking, exhilirating progress to the Spanish frontier.

Alternatively hugging the rocky hillside with gorges below to the right, then to the left, traversing deep valleys on viaducts, plunging into and emerging from its many tunnels to the evocative tooting of its whistle. Photographers and budding film-makers will particularly appreciate the unbroken panoramas from the open-top carriage, even the most reticent feel compelled to return the friendly waves from passers-by which its passage inevitably seems to invite

Our itinerary is based on 3 nights by the coast, followed by 3 in the mountains, witha final night in Perpigan, though the flexibility to accommodate extra nights according to individual preferences ( please ask for details and prices)

Collioure

Collioure nestles in the most dramatic part of the Catalan coast, where the Pyrenean foothills meet the sea, a few miles from the Spanish frontier. Generations of artists, including Matisse, have long been attracted both by this lovely setting and thevivid colours enhanced by the uniquely warm clear light of the Mediterranean sun. Explore the warren of alleyways in the old town clustered below the imposing citadel and around the lively fishing harbour; spend an unhurried hour over an aperitif at a quayside cafe or even longer at one of the many restaurants serving succulent loval specialities, or simply relax on one of the town's three sheltered beaches

Saillagousse

In stark contrast, high up on the Cerdagne plateau, Saillagousse makes an ideal base to explore this wild but welcoming region, as testified by the generations of visitors who have established its reputation as the finest walking country in the Pyrenees chain, with its many marked paths affording a unique opportunity to discover each at his or her own pace, its rich flora and wildlife, including chamois pine-martins, kestrels, vultures and eagles, even the occasional bear or lynx. Alternatively, simply relax by the hotel swimming-pool or in its peaceful orchard garden before sampling local specialities in its reputed restaurant.

Perpignan

The local capital and where the Catalan artist Savador Dali declared the city's railway station to be the centre of the Universe, hence his bust which proudly adorns the station. The last night is spent in Perpignan to ensure an easier return journey home.

This package takes you to the furthest reaches of the French mainland, to a region perhaps less well-known than other more traditional tourist destinations, but one with its own unique charm and character, and which makes this a truly fitting addition to the FTS portfolio of holiday ideas incorporating "great little train journeys"
