Capital of Normandy, Rouen is a vibrant modern city with a rich past, as testified by its exceptional architectural heritage - the medieval St-Maclou district with its medieval half-timbered facades, the Gothic and Renaissance mansions around Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Grand Horloge with one of the oldest mechanisms in Europe. A great cultural centre too - birthplace of the Impressionist movement, Monet and others attracted by the light on the Seine, and with a host of excellent museums.

Son et Lumiere (1 Jun - 15 Sept 13) projested on to Roen Cathedral, the first show "Premiere Impressions" showcases "Impessionism" and the second revisits the myth of Joan of Arc. The show is linked to the annual "Normandy Impressionist Festival (17 April to 29 September 2013)

OPTIONAL DAY TRIP TO VISIT MONET'S GARDEN IN GIVERNY: Giverny is only 40 minutes by train from Rouen, so why not take advantage of our do-it-yourself excursion including day return rail travel and entrance to Monet's house and gardens, so no queuing (open 1 April - 31 October). We provide you with a timetable of services connecting with the shuttle bus (10 mins) to Giverny (pay locally for shuttle, 4 euros return in 2011)
