Spanning the mighty Rhône and Saône rivers, Lyon is not only one of France’s most famous gastronomic centres it is also the “Gateway to the South” and on arriving you will immediately feel a touch of the South with its wonderfully temperate climate. There are hundreds of well preserved buildings dating back to the 16th and 17th century, when the city was the centre of the European silk trade. Modern life revolves around the many cafes on the vast Place Bellecour, one of the largest squares in Europe, but don’t forget to visit the Musée des Beaux Arts, the second largest and most important collection of Art in France after the Louvre.
